Types of Treatments offered by Moorfields Eye Hospital

Moorfields Eye Hospital is a world-renowned name in the field of ophthalmic services and offers more than 100 treatments for vision correction for age groups starting from children to adults. Mentioned below are some of the top treatments provided Moorfields Eye Hospital:

  • Laser Eye Surgery
  • Implantable Contact Lens Surgery (ICL)
  • Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
  • Cataracts Surgery

Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is the most common treatment offered by the eye care providers, which involves a precise reshaping of the cornea for correcting Myopia (short sight), Hyperopia (Long Sight) and astigmatism. This treatment involves LASIK and Surface Laser Treatments (PRK, LASEK, and TransPRK).

  • LASIK: This is one of the most common laser eye treatments performed for vision correction. It involves the use of two different types of lasers, first is femtosecond laser, used to create a thin protective flap, and then another laser which is an excimer laser reshapes the cornea in the eye to rectify the focus. The procedure causes no to minimal discomfort, and its recovery time is quite fast. The cell layer around the flap starts to heal only after 3-6 hours, which leads to improvement in the sight.
  • Surface Laser Treatments: The procedures involved in Surface Laser Treatment (Lasek and TransPRK) are performed directly under the corneal epithelium (the layer of the cornea), which if removed by the surgeon is called LASEK, or if it is done by laser is called TransPRK, before reshaping the cornea for the vision correction. These treatments take more healing time than LASIK, because the corneal layers take some days to grow back, and a few weeks to correct the focus. These treatments are more suitable for patients with thinner corneas.

Implantable Contact Lens Surgery (ICL)

Implantable Contact Lens Surgery is another one the most common type of vision correction treatment, which involves implantation of contact lenses inside the eyes between iris and the natural lenses. Implantable Contact Lens is flexible and soft implants, just like traditional contact lenses. The lenses are implanted permanently, which does not require to be taken out, cleaned and replaced. The surgery uses Phakic Intraocular Lenses (pIOL’s) and at Moorfields, two types of pIOLs – Visian Implantable Collamer lens and Artisan intraocular lens.

Refractive Lens Surgery (RLE)

Refractive Lens Surgery is also known as Lens replacement surgery, which involves replacing common eye natural lenses with a synthetic lens, known as an intraocular lens. The procedure is performed to rectify short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism to limit or eliminate the need to wear contact lenses. The procedure is also helpful in improving the vision of patients with cataracts.

This treatment is suitable for the patients over the age group of 50 years with glasses prescription of higher than the standard range for laser eye surgery.

Cataracts Surgery

Cataracts are one of the most common eye conditions that occur with age. In cataracts, the vision gets blurred and cloudy. In a normal eye, where the vision of the lens is clear, the light rays can focus on the back of the eye, which signals the brain, to allow us to see clearly. In the case of cataracts, the lens becomes cloudy and blocks the light passing through the retina. Cataract development is a slow process that blurs the vision gradually. At Moorfields Eye Hospital, the patients get high-quality cataracts surgery. Refractive Lens Replacement is an effective method used to correct the blurred vision. The surgeons working with this eye provider hold the designations of accredited consultants at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

This treatment is performed on patients with very high prescriptions. This procedure combines laser treatment and lens implantation surgery to rectify the vision.
